Geykido Comet Records—better known as GC Records— is the punk rock collective that has put this record out. This is the catalog number, our 47th release. Since 1999, the label has grown into a multimedia library of CDs, USBs, vinyl records, DVDs, and books representing the efforts of hundreds of musicians and artists.
2014 marks 15 years of creative output. It is a year of celebration and rebirth. To celebrate we held a nationwide scavenger hunt. Clues were sent out via Twitter and Instagram, and fans searched around their respective cities hunting for GC goodies. We also organized a 15-year anniversary show featuring bands (including several who reunited for the occasion) artists, fans, and friends all coming together to have a good time.
In 2011, ThinkSpeak Publishing was born as a sister company in order to facilitate our publishing needs. Additionally, we started another subsidiary label, Yum Yum Vinyl Records, to release material by bands that don’t fit within the GC Records roster. We want to make sure no loyal GC fans feel alienated when this collective starts releasing indie, dance, electronic, experimental, acoustic, or country music.
We believe in passion, dedication, art, and the freedom to express yourself how you see fit – and that is exactly what you will find on this album. There is no side A. No side B. Rather, you have the “Lightning” side, encompassing all things traditionally GC, and then you have the “Cloud” side, which introduces you to Yum Yum Vinyl Records.
The Lightning side is punk rock in its purest form. The Cloud side is the new face of Vegas music. You might prefer one side to the other, or you may dislike a song or two on each side. The beauty of this evolution within our various collectives is that you are likely to discover tracks you love and tracks you hate — and you are more than welcome to your opinion.
Regardless of your likes and dislikes, these are the musicians who are working from the bottom up. They are giving everything they have in order to make a name for themselves in a world where SoundCloud and Vine influence album sales more than actual talent. This record is who we are and what we have become. All we ask of you is to keep an open mind.
So Why Las Vegas?
After 10 years of releasing music in Southern California, we picked up our HQ and moved to Vegas. While we’ve worked with a number of Vegas bands since relocating, this is the first time we’ve officialy celebrated the music of Sin City. This is our way of showing the nation that this town has a great music scene — a scene not built around national touring acts who use the city as a stopping point on their way to L.A., but a thriving Vegas scene in and of itself.
We also want to prove to Vegas residents that there is a diverse music culture in the valley that in no way depends on tourism, transplant music festivals, or incubator money. These are real artists carving their own place in the American musical landscape by doing what they love most: writing and performing music.
We are extremely proud of all of the artists on this LP (except those crazy Kill the Scientist guys… a bunch of weirdos, that lot!) and we can’t wait to see what else they have in store for the future.
All of the proceeds from this first pressing will go into a second pressing. After that, all proceeds will go to a reputable local Las Vegas charity, so from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your purchase.
